Association football, also known as football or simply football, is an international team sport played between two sides of eleven players each. It’s played regularly around the globe by about 250 million people in more than 200 countries and dependencies. The game is named after the English county of England where it was born (football being the word used in the English language to refer to the game when the locals came to play). The game can be played with two paddles and one ball, but it’s often played using four paddles, one for each team. This has led to the varying regulation sizes of football in different countries.
Each team starts the game by having ten men on each side. The goal in football is the end of the half when neither team has taken a goal from the previous half. The match is normally played on a rectangular field, but variations have been made over the years. The object of the game is simple; get the ball into the opposing team’s goal. Goals are scored when the ball crosses the goal line, usually from a corner.
There are three types of football that are commonly played, the classic (or standard) football, the penalty kick or foul kick and the extra point kick. The football field is divided into ten areas, the inside of which is called the goal area. The football field is divided into two sections – the forwards and the backs. Every player on either team is allowed to move about the field freely except that they may not block the opponents’ goals. Possession is also a form of passing, but each team has only one ball, called the football.
Another variation of football is freestyle. It differs from the standard game in that there are no boundaries or markers to determine possession. The players only attempt to run between the opposing teams’ goal lines, with their football being moved as little as an inch. The game ends when there is no longer any possession of the football field. The freestyle rule is most commonly seen in younger leagues or friendly games. It is considered to be less competitive than the standard game.
Touching of the ball is done with two hands, meaning one holds the ball and the other helps to catch it. This is known as catching. When a team plays with eleven players, it is called a full-sided game. A team must have eleven players on the field to begin the game. The playing time starts at the side nearest the goal, which is usually the side with the opposite ball when it comes to standard football.
