The common misconception about Muay Thai is that it is completely different from Kickboxing or MMA. That is completely wrong. In fact, depending on your background and whether or not you train in Muay Thai or Kick boxing, it’s important to realize what sets your martial art apart from others.

First, both Kickboxing and Muay Thai employ striking techniques that utilize the upper body but very different techniques for kicking. It is important for a fighter in either discipline to be able to accurately strike their opponent while staying away from being hit with the groin, eye area, neck, or back. Being able to execute these strikes perfectly is crucial to winning a fight. But while a Muay Thai fighter is not going to be able to throw his opponents around like a boxer, they will be able to take them down fairly easily. This means that Muay Thai fighters can use their elbows, knees, and elbows to put an opponent on their back. A full contact k1 drill is not used in Muay Thai because these strikes are meant to be delivered from a distance.

In addition, Muay Thai fighters are known to use low kicks and spinning punches as well as high knees and elbows to their opponents. While this may seem like a lot of techniques to master, they are all designed to keep opponents on their toes, to maintain distance, and to strike at their body when the time comes to attack. Muay Thai striking techniques are also quite brutal and hard hitting. Many Muay Thai fighters spend months training for their matches and there are even tournaments held to test the skills of the champions. These matches are usually very intense affairs and there is always a heated rivalry between the fighters.

Finally, it should also be noted that Muay Thai striking techniques have been adopted by American Boxers and mixed martial arts fighters. There are some well known fighters that have adopted the Muay Thai technique such as Glen Johnson and Rashad Evans. So if you want to learn some solid striking techniques, you can certainly do so from an American Karate school. But be careful, they may be harder to learn than a full-contact version of muay Thai.
